The Estuary Management Group consists of technical staff from member organisations involved in management of the Parramatta River Estuary. From 2010 – 2013, the Group was responsible for overseeing development of the Parramatta River Estuary Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP). The Group are now working on implementing actions outlined in the Plan. Councils who have adopted the Plan are eligible for grant funding up to 50% of the total cost through the NSW Government’s Estuary Management Program.
The CZMP was developed in three main stages, which are all now completed:
Stage One: The Parramatta River Estuary Data Compilation and Review Study.
Stage Two: The Parramatta River Estuary Processes Study, which involved an historical aerial photo comparison, estuarine foreshore assessment and prioritisation, GIS database compilation and environmental sensitivity analysis. This Study was the precursor to preparing a CZMP.
Stage Three: The Parramatta River Estuary Coastal Zone Management Plan. This Plan was completed in 2013 and has been adopted by all councils within the Parramatta River Estuary catchment. It involved extensive consultation with community members and stakeholders to discuss the appropriate management of the estuary for the next 10-20 years.
» As part of the estuary management process, a partnership agreement was also signed between the University of Sydney and Parramatta City Council in order to finalise a hydrodynamic model of the estuary. The work was undertaken by PhD student Serena Lee under the supervision of Associate Professor Gavin Birch.
